Principal’s Newsletter of Prospect Mountain High School

Volume 6, Issue 5                                      J Fitzpatrick, Principal                                           January 1, 2010

Please note: Quarter 2 ends on January 22, 2010.

Happy New Year!  I hope you had a safe, restful, and enjoyable holiday break.

Fortunately for the PMHS learning community, we didn’t have to deal with Mother Nature’s fury like we did last December.  Unfortunately, the rest of the country hasn’t been so lucky.  Nonetheless, we had plenty to keep us busy around here during the month of December.  On the Wednesday before winter break, we held a pre-Winter Carnival where classes competed against each other in various demonstrations of school spirit.  Although the results didn’t officially count towards the annual Winter Carnival trophy, the underclassmen definitely made names for themselves.  (The freshmen and sophomores in particular were very impressive.)  We also got to listen to the PMHS band and choirs perform.  If you joined us on the evening of December 17th for the Winter Concert, you got to experience the full performance.  As usual, band director, Tom Stevens, and chorus director, Jamie Bolduc, directed wonderful performances and the students were great.

As we look into the month of January, there are a several important dates to keep in mind.  Financial Aid Night is scheduled for 6:30pm on Wednesday, January 6th.  Alumni Day is scheduled for Thursday, the 14th.  Alumni Day features former PMHS graduates coming back to speak with current seniors about their experiences beyond high school.  It’s always great to hear how well former students are doing.  Report cards will be mailed out at the end of the month/beginning of next month (with the February newsletter).  However, the most important dates for the month take place the week of January 18th as it begins our mid-year exam week and the end of first semester.  The specific dates and times are outlined below:

  • Monday, January 18th, is Martin Luther King Day.  There is no school.
  • Tuesday, January 19th, is a regular school day operating on a normal bell schedule.
  • Wednesday, January 20th, is an early release at 2:20pm.
  • Thursday, January 21st, is an early release at 1:00pm.
  • Friday, January 22nd, is an early release at 1:00pm.  (This is the end of first semester.)

To anticipate a few of your questions:

-          Students do not have to come to school if they do not have a scheduled exam.

-          With written (not verbal) permission from a parent/guardian, students may leave school after they have completed their exams.  This does not include leaving the classroom before the end of the allotted exam time.  This only applies to those students who do not have a second session exam.

-          If a student leaves the exam room during exam time and does not return, he or she will be given a zero for the exam.

-          If a student misses the exam with an unexcused absence, he or she will not be allowed to make up the exam, thus receiving a zero and not getting credit for the course.

-          If a student misses the exam with an excused absence, he or she will be allowed to make up the exam during make-up times.

-          If a student misses the exam with an unexcused tardy, he or she will have to make up the exam during the make-up time that same day.

-          The cafeteria and library will be available for students to study during their non-exam times.  Non-testing students must report to one of those two designated areas.

-          Lunch will be served as indicated on the schedule.

-          Morning busses will run on a normal day schedule Wednesday through Friday.  Please make note of the afternoon bus times.

-          Any student removed from class for disciplinary reasons will receive a zero on the exam.

If you have other questions about the exam schedule or particular exam dates/times, please call the school at 875-3800 or check out the PMHS Website at: www.pmhschool.com for further clarification.

Faculty and Staff Recognition

In December of 2008, two different staff members welcomed new daughters into this world.  Interestingly enough, this feat was repeated as two more young ladies were welcomed into the PMHS community by two (new) different staff members this year.  English teacher Chris Reeves and his wife welcomed their daughter, Lily Anne Reeves, who was born on December 9th 2009.  And, I’m proud to announce that my wife and I welcomed our daughter, Lilah August Fitzpatrick, on December 16th, 2009.  Moms and babies are doing well.  Dads are still adjusting.

Athletics

The PMHS Boys’ and Girls’ Varsity basketball teams participated in the Lakes Region Holiday Tournament at Gilford High School this week. The boys lost their first game to Winnisquam 57-42, and beat Laconia 46-33 in the second round. Zach Drouin (’11) scored 13 points in each game and made the All Tournament Team. Greg Tinkham (’11) had 11 points against Laconia. The girls beat Winnisquam in the first round 47-29 but lost to Gilford 46-29 in the second round. It was a good team effort by all. Go T-WOLVES!!!
