Principal’s Newsletter of Prospect Mountain High School

Volume 6, Issue 5                                      J Fitzpatrick, Principal                                         February 1, 2010

Please note: Quarter 2 Report Cards are enclosed.

Last week, most students completed their first semester final exams.  For some, they completed their mid-year exams.  In doing either, the first half of the school year has come to an end, and as you probably noticed, report cards are included in this mailing.  If you have any questions or believe that a mistake has been made, please do not hesitate to contact me or the guidance office so that we can rectify the situation.

The advent of second semester brings an entirely new schedule, for most students.  It also brings an opportunity for a fresh, new start.  I hope that all students take full advantage of the new opportunities that lay ahead over the next several months.  And, I encourage you to engage your child in conversation about his or her new courses, teachers, and workload.  If you’re looking for an ice breaker to start the conversation, ask them about their day’s learning objectives.  I’ve asked every teacher to make their daily learning objectives known at the beginning of each class.  Doing so allows students to have a clearer focus as to what is expected of them by the end of the class.  And don’t forget that you can monitor your child’s academic progress and attendance online by using our Web2school software.  Contact the Main Office for assistance setting up an account.

On the topic of schedules, we will begin next year’s course selection process within the next few weeks.  Every student will be given a program of studies, which includes a description of all of our courses.  The program of studies contains a lot of valuable information, so please take the time to examine it carefully with your child.

Also coming up this month is our annual Winter Carnival, which will be held the week of February 15th, with a culminating event on Friday, February 19th, the day before February break.  Winter Carnival has been a tradition since 2005 and is a terrific opportunity for everyone at PMHS to demonstrate their pride and school spirit.  We held a pre-Winter Carnival day on December 23rd and saw a strong showing of school spirit.  We’ll see if the Class of 2010 can repeat as champions again this year.

In closing, I highly recommend that you attend a home basketball game sometime soon.  Just a few nights ago, our PMHS varsity girls’ team beat the currently #1 ranked team.  It was awesome!  On that note, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to give me a call at 875-8800, or send me an email at jfitzpatrick@pmhschool.com. Take care.

Academics

The Prospect Mountain Mock Trial Team will compete at Yale University, February 13, 2010 in the Yale High School Invitational Tournament in Connecticut. The winner of this competition will proceed to the National Tournament. The tournament will consist of two rounds. There will also be a mock trial workshop between the two rounds. This year’s case is criminal and involves aggravated robbery case. The team competed in November in a regional competition at the Manchester Superior Court with Souhegan High School and Bishop Guertin High School. Although the preparation is arduous, successful students learn far more than any classroom simulation can provide, and have an activity to list on their college applications that is top tier. This year’s dynamic team members are Shayna Sweezy (’13), Natalie Stackhouse (’13), Nicole Oulette (’13), Nicole Dwyer (’12), Michele Laliberte (‘12’), Rebecca Browning (’10), Lianna Tetreau (’10), Allison Cormier (’10), Steven Beach, Katie Farrior (’10), and Joey Monasky (’10). The team is coached by Laura Dwyer and attorney Sally O’Brien. "The best defense is: knowing your rights!"

Shayna Sweezy makes her case.

US FIRST Robotics Competition

The US FIRST organization announced the game for this year’s competition on Saturday, January 9, 2010. “Breakaway is a game played on the FIELD (illustrated in the figure below). Two ALLIANCES, one red and one blue, composed of three FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) teams each, compete in each MATCH. The object of the game is to attain a higher score than your opponent by shooting BALLS into a GOAL, climbing on the ALLIANCE TOWER or PLATFORM, or by lifting an ALLIANCE ROBOT off the PLAYING SURFACE.

A MATCH is 2 minutes and 15 seconds long. An AUTONOMOUS PERIOD starts each MATCH during which the ROBOTS are controlled by pre-programmed instructions. The AUTONOMOUS PERIOD is followed by the TELEOPERATED PERIOD during which the DRIVERS assume control of the robot. The ROBOTS continue to play the game until the TELEOPERATED PERIOD is over.”  Source:  http://www.usfirst.org
