Principal’s Newsletter of Prospect Mountain High School

Volume 6, Issue 4                                      J Fitzpatrick, Principal                                       December 1, 2009

Please note: Quarter 2 Progress Reports enclosed.

We did it!  Prospect Mountain High School officially received its long-awaited accreditation!  Last Thursday, I had the privilege of attending the annual New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) annual conference in Boston.  Joined by Steering Committee Chairperson, Cathy Fraser; Instruction Committee Chairperson, Katey Hills; and Mission Committee Chairperson, Mark Anthony; we happily received our official certificate of accreditation.  Our certificate of accreditation plaque, which was presented by the NEASC Board of Trustees, will proudly be displayed in the front area of the building.  The self-study and on-site visit phases of the accreditation process were long and arduous, but well worth it.  We learned a lot about ourselves: our areas of strengths as well as areas where growth is needed.  We will use the NEASC report to help guide us in the future to make decisions that support our school’s mission and serve the entire learning community.  The next stage for PMHS is to write a two-year report.  The two-year report will specifically address our progress toward the recommendations outlined by NEASC.  As those recommendations are addressed, I will relay them to you via the newsletter or the school’s website.  As for now, we’re going to enjoy our accomplishment.  As part of the learning community that helped PMHS achieve this, you should do the same.

November was a great month to celebrate student achievements.  The fall sports banquet was fun and the National Honor Society saw 18 new members inducted into the PMHS chapter.  Social studies teacher, Russ Troendle, was the guest speaker for the event.  You can read more about the athletic achievements as well as the new inductees’ names below.  We also celebrated the 153 students who made Honor Roll for the first quarter.

November is also the time of year that I like to make a couple of annual plugs to remind you to remind your teenage drivers to drive safely on the roads, especially if this is his or her first winter with a license.  Please also remind them to dress appropriately during the winter months.  Although flip-flops and shorts may be fashionably trendy this time of year, they clearly are not suitable for being outside or waiting at a bus stop.

In just a few short weeks, we’ll break for winter vacation as noted on the calendar on the back page of the newsletter.  Please make note that our annual Winter Concert will take place on December 17th at 6:30pm.  If you have never attended a PMHS concert before, I highly suggest that you join us for the Winter Concert as our Mixed and Select Choruses as well as our Concert and Jazz Bands provide some wonderful holiday music and entertainment.  It’s a really fun night and it’s great to see our students’ perform.  I hope you can join us that evening, but if you don’t, please have a safe and enjoyable winter break.

If you would like to contact me with any comments, concerns, or questions please call 875-8800 or send me an email at: jfitzpatrick@pmhschool.com.  And, don’t forget to check out the school’s Website at www.pmhschool.com.

Have a safe and happy holiday season.

Staff Recognition

English teacher, Diana DeNitto and social studies teacher, Katey Hills procured a grant totaling over $9,900.00 to use technology to integrate components of the English and social studies curricula for deeper student learning related to American history. The grant project is based on the essential question: How have historical events or periods influenced American culture? Their specific focus for the pilot project will be on the Vietnam War era and its impact on modern America. Congratulations to Mrs. De Nitto and Mrs. Hills.

Social studies teacher, Mike Folan, recently served as the reviewer for the Social Studies Teacher Certification program at Plymouth State College for the Department of Education.
