Please note:  Final Exams will be June 19-23, 2009..

A few days ago seniors should have received a letter outlining end-of-the-year activities.  To reiterate, senior exams will take place from Wednesday, June 10th through Friday, June 12th. Teachers will determine the dates and times of exams.  All seniors must take their final exams as credit for a course will not be given to those who do not complete a final exam.  Once students have completed the final exam, they no longer have to attend that respective class.

Graduation rehearsal will take place Monday, June 15th, through Thursday, June 18th, from 8:30am to 12:00pm.  All seniors who intend on taking part in the graduation ceremony need to attend all graduation practices.  We will be preparing for both an outside and an inside ceremony.

Senior Awards Night will be Wednesday, June 17th, in the PMHS auditorium at 6:00pm.  Seniors will receive academic awards in addition to scholarships.  I encourage all seniors to attend Awards Night as it is one of the last opportunities to sit together as a class.  I also want to encourage parents to attend to help honor our seniors.

To All Underclassmen and Their Families:

  • Students do not have to come to school if he or she does not have a scheduled exam.
  • With written (not verbal) permission from a parent/guardian, students may leave school after he or she has completed his or her exams.  This does not include leaving the classroom before the end of the allotted exam time.  This only applies to those students who do not have a second session exam.
  • The cafeteria and library will be available for students to study during his or her non-exam times.  Non testing students must report to one of those two designated areas.
  • If your child arrives late to his or her exam, he/she will not be allowed in the room and will have to take the exam during the designated make-up time on the last day of school.
  • We will be serving lunch as indicated on the schedule.
  • The morning buses will run on a normal day schedule Thursday through Monday.
  • If a student leaves the exam room during exam time and does not return, he or she will be given a zero for the exam.
  • If a student misses the exam with an unexcused absence, he or she will not be allowed to make up the exam, thus receiving a zero and not getting credit for the course.
  • If a student misses the exam with an unexcused tardy, he or she will have to make up the exam during make-up times.  And of course, if a student misses the exam with an excused absence, he or she will be allowed to make up the exam during make up times.
  • Lunch will be served as indicated on the schedule.
  • Morning buses will run on a normal day schedule Wednesday through Friday.  Make note of the afternoon bus times.
  • Any type of electronic devices will not be allowed during exam times, i.e., iPods, cell phone, hand held games, etc.
  • Students may, at the teacher’s discretion, listen to iPods once they have finished the exam.
  • Any student removed from class for disciplinary reasons will receive a zero on the exam.

If you have any questions about the final exam schedules (or anything else), please call the school at 875-3800 or check the PMHS website at: www.pmhschool.com

Academics

The PMHS Mock Trial Team, coached by Mrs. Laura Dwyer and Mrs. Sally O’Brien, participated in an invitational competition at Franklin Pierce College on May 13, 2009.  All of the team members did well and received top scores.  Although there were no “winners” in this competition, certain members of the team were recognized.  Becca Browning and Michelle LaLiberte both received outstanding witness awards and Megan Farrell and Allison Cormier received outstanding lawyer awards.  Caitlin Tetreau was recognized as the team MVP by her peers at their banquet.  Because so many students showed interest in Mock Trial the Bar Association plans to fund this program next year.

Over the full two days in the city, the club visited the US Capitol, several Smithsonian museums, and Manassas and Antietam National Battlefields.  A special thanks to Jennifer Morton and Chris Reeves for driving and chaperoning.  We look forward to more educational History Club trips next year!

Shop For Healthy Foods This Summer

By Mrs. Jane Smith Family and Consumer Science

Instead of reaching for chips, pick up strawberries this summer to make sweet, juicy strawberry shortcakes. Seasonal fruits and vegetables are plentiful at local farmers markets and are rich in the vitamins and nutrients you need for a healthy body. A typical supermarket contains more than 35,000 foods, making it difficult to make the right choices. Here are a few tips to help you make healthy selections when grocery shopping:

  1. Make a list so as not be tempted by all the sights, sounds, and smells that entice you to buy foods that may be unhealthy.
  2. Buy a variety of foods as shown in the Food Guide Pyramid.
  3. Shop the perimeter of the store. Nutrient rich foods such as fruits and vegetables, meat and dairy products are around the outside isles of the store. These foods are in their natural and least processed form.
  4. Buy whole grains. Buy brown rice instead of white. Look for whole wheat flour as the first ingredient in bread, and try artichoke pasta instead of white.
  5. Buy all natural peanut butter or almond butter. Avoid peanut butter made with sugar and cotton seed oil.

Stock plenty of nutrient dense foods in your kitchen and watch it disappear!
