Principal’s Newsletter of Prospect Mountain High School

Volume 4, Issue 3                               J Fitzpatrick, Principal                                                 October 1, 2007

Please note:  Progress Reports are enclosed.

Happy October!  It’s hard to believe the first month of school is over, but I am happy to report that our first month was great.  Everyone seems to be settled in.  There’s been a lot going on and the month of October is no different as you’ll see throughout the rest of this newsletter.  For instance, this Thursday PMHS will host its 4th annual Parent Night from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.  This is an opportunity for you to explore the building and experience your child’s daily events.  When you arrive on Thursday evening, we will supply you with your child’s schedule and even provide you with some free entertainment courtesy of the PMHS music department.  For those of you who get hungry or thirsty, the PMHS Student Council will be selling pizza and drinks in the café.  You will also have the opportunity to meet the new administration as well as your child’s teachers.  You’ll spend the evening traveling from classroom to classroom learning about your child’s courses.  Parent Night is a wonderful opportunity for you to see what goes on here at PMHS.  It is equally important that we have the opportunity to meet you.

One of the things that we will ask of you on Thursday evening is for you to take a moment to fill out a brief survey that relates to our NEASC accreditation.  We need to get as much feedback from the PMHS learning community as we possibly can and Thursday’s venue is a great opportunity to do just that.  If you are unable to attend Parent Night, please contact Cathy Fraser at cfraser@pmhschool.com to arrange for a time to take the survey.  It is very important that we have completed surveys from as many (preferably all) parents as possible.

Last, I just want to take a moment to ask a favor of you.  One of the things I have tried to implement as Principal is to readily communicate with my staff on a regular basis whether via email or in-person.  Even if I don’t have anything in particular to ask of or say to them, I am interested in simply hearing about them and what’s going on in their lives.  My favor is to ask you to do the same with your child.  I know, first hand, how difficult it is sometimes to talk to a teenager.  But I can also tell you, first hand, that simply talking to them (about anything and everything) helps build and maintain a strong relationship and that’s better for all of us.

Be sure to check out the PMHS Website at www.pmhschool.com where you will find additional helpful information.  Please feel free to contact me with any comments, concerns, or questions you may have.  I can be reached at 875-8800 or jfitzpatrick@pmhschool.com.

Student Recognition

Congratulations to Mike Jensen, who was selected Athlete of the Week by the Concord Monitor last week for his athletic prowess as the PMHS varsity soccer team’s goalie!

Congratulations to James Richardson, who won the New Hampshire Junior Bass Masters Fishing Tournament!  He will go on to compete in the Junior World Championship Bass Fishing Tournament in South Carolina in February, 2008.

Congratulations to the following students who participated in the Granite State Challenge competition on September 17, 2007:  Ryan Finethy, Captain, Megan Farrell, Aaron Miller, Derek King and alternates Josh Hough and Caitlyn LaCourse.  The team had a strong showing but lost in the final round.  The program aired on September 26, 2007 on NHPTV Channel 11.

Parent Night

Parent Night will be on Thursday, October 4, 2007 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm.  Please plan to join us for this open house.  It is an excellent opportunity for you to meet your child’s teachers, speak with administrators, and find out what’s going on at school.  The Student Council will be selling pizza and soda during Parent Night.

NEASC Accreditation

PMHS is currently in the Self-Study process for its accreditation.  As part of this process, all students, parents, faculty and school board members must complete a survey.  We will be making the survey available for parents at the Open House on October 4, the school play in November, the winter concert and at other times.  If you would like to arrange for a time to come in and take this survey, please contact Cathy Fraser at 875-3800 ext. 3087 or cfraser@pmhschool.com.  Thank you for your assistance with this important task.

NECAP Testing

The New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) is the result of collaboration among New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont to build a set of assessments for grades 3 through 8 and 11 to meet the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLBA).

NECAP testing will begin on Tuesday, October 2, 2007 and will continue on October 10-11, 2007.  This test is administered to juniors.  You can help maximize positive test results by ensuring that your child has adequate rest on the nights before and during testing.  Breakfast will be served free of charge to juniors on test days.  The results of our NECAP tests will be reported to the state Department of Education.  It is important that students strive to do well on this test.
