Principal’s Newsletter of Prospect Mountain High School

Volume 4, Issue 8                               J Fitzpatrick, Principal                                                     March 1, 2008

Please note: 3rdd Quarter progress reports are included with this newsletter.

Due to snow days the end of the third quarter has been extended to Friday, April 11, 2008

Are you sick of shoveling snow yet?  I know I am.  I’m hoping that we’ve seen the end of it because over the past few months I’ve lost my mailbox to a snow plow, my driveway is no longer wide enough to fit two cars side-by-side, and there’s enough sand spread across my front lawn (again from the plow truck) to build my son a sandbox this spring.  Needless to say, I’m ready for April flowers or showers or however that saying goes.

Because of vacation and unwanted snow days, February was an abbreviated month for PMHS.  Because of that, we had to postpone and reschedule several events such as sports games, Progress Reports, and “Winterfest 08.”  We did, however, host part two of Winter Carnival and the PMHS senior class clearly demonstrated why “08 dominates.”  It was a fantastic day as most of our student body and staff participated in various activities to demonstrate and build upon school spirit.

As we entered March we found that our calendar needed to be adjusted.  Progress Reports were postponed a week and are included in this mailing.  We also cancelled our Academic Night and intend on rescheduling it to a date in mid-April, which is yet to be determined.  Coinciding with the delay in sending the Progress Reports, the end of the third quarter has been extended by a week giving teachers and students more opportunity to teach and learn.  Third quarter will now end on April 11, 2008.

The scheduling process for next year begins next week.  All students were given a Course Selection sheet and Program of Studies earlier this week.  The Guidance Director and I spoke with students and explained the course selection process and the importance of taking the time to speak with teachers to make sure the appropriate courses are selected for next year.  Please take the time to talk with your child and discuss some of the course options for next year.  It’s very important that we all play an active role in making sure we are providing all students the best possible learning opportunities.

On a different note, we recently received our school’s NECAP (New England Common Assessment Program) scores.  The NECAP is a state-mandated standardized test that is given to every 11th grade student in the State of New Hampshire.  The NECAP is one of the ways in which the State measures the effectiveness of a school’s teaching and learning.  The test is broken down into four subject areas: reading, writing, mathematics, and science.  This past fall, our students took the reading, writing, and math portions.  This May, our students will take the science portion.  The results of this test provide us with some useful information.  For one, it lets us know where PMHS students stand compared to other 11th graders from throughout the state.  More importantly, it helps us identify the areas in which we need to grow as school.  All schools’ NECAP test scores can be found on the State’s website.  Additionally, we will be mailing home individual student test scores with report cards in April.

If you have any questions or comments about Prospect Mountain’s NECAP scores, or anything else for that matter, please do not hesitate to contact me.  I can be reached at 875-8800 or at jfitzpatrick@pmhschool.com and don’t forget to check out the school’s Website at www.pmhschool.com for important dates and notices.

Student Recognition

Arts

Last month the winners of the Scholastic Arts Competition were announced.  The following awards were not mentioned:

Chris Loprete won a People’s Choice Award.  This award is given to students by a popular vote of people attending the exhibit.  It is rare to receive one of these awards.  Congratulations, Chris!

Tyler Houghton received not just one, but two Silver Key awards for his work, and Stephanie Roy received two Honorable Mentions for her pieces.

Athletics

Congratulations to the Boys Varsity Basketball team and Coach Carpenter, who finished the regular season 17 – 1 and then went on to beat Newport in the playoff opener 72-40.  They advance to the quarterfinals.  Good luck!

The PMHS Spirit Squad took third place in the state competition during February break.  They advance to the regional competition at Woburn (Mass.) High School on March 15, 2008.  Bring it on!!!

Brianna Tidd competed in several ski meets this winter.  On February 15, she and the Alpine Ski team competed at Pat’s Peak and Brianna took first place for slalom skiing this winter, and finished second in the giant slalom in Division 3.  At Gunstock on February 21, Brianna qualified for the Eastern High School Championships.  As one of the top 10 high school female skiers in NH, she will compete against girls from the Eastern region of the United States at Mt. Cranmore on March 15 & 16, 2008.  Congratulations and good luck!!
